A series of tools to use to help find core limiting beliefs

Client List

Methods of Finding Beliefs

  1. Begin by asking Top-Level Questions.
  2. Rephrase your client’s beliefs to make them simpler.
  3. Use Belief Self-Diagnoses Exercise
  4. Do a Historic Intake (See Psychologists Client Intake Form)
  5. Do a Beliefs’ Intake.
  6. Use the BodyWisdom Process
  7. What’s Underneath That?
  8. Note Beliefs Under Emotions. (What belief is present with this emotion… feel in to feeling of that belief)
  9. What Would Someone Have to Believe? (brainstorming).
  10. Study Yourself.
  11. Spiral Back to the Source.
  12. Countercurrent Response Technique.
  13. Sentence Completion.

Mix and Match

Many of these techniques can be combined in searching for a core belief.

For example, if your client says, “I don’t know what my core beliefs are”, you could ask them top level questions (method #1).

Then you might hear “I seem to find myself constantly arguing with competing voices in my head”, to which you could ask them to simplify them (method #2).

If they have difficulty simplifying their belief, ask, “How would you describe those voices to a four-year-old child?”. This should help them simplify their statement.

If they come up with a simpler response like, “I feel confused”, you could use method #7 and say, “What’s underneath that?”

Bottom line… get creative

Top Level Questions

These are generic beliefs that may be core beliefs or may lead to deeper beliefs.

  • What beliefs are you aware of?
  • What voices do you hear and what do they say?
  • What do you want to change and why?
  • What to you want to create that you’re unable to?
  • What’s interfering with your life?
  • What is the belief you have that’s underneath that situation?
  • What is it that’s making you so angry?
  • What do you think is unfair?
  • What are you afraid of?

Spiral Back to the Source

Instruct client:

  1. “Close your eyes and remember a time when that particular belief (or experience or issue) came up in your life. Spend a few moments there and describe it to me.”
  2. “Now spiral back through time and remember an earlier, similar incident when you felt that way. Observe that incident and notice how your belief took shape there, at that time. Describe it to me.
  3. Continue this pattern, saying, “Now spiral back again, further back in time until you find an earlier, similar incident.” Continue until you find the earliest incident. They will know if this is the earliest.
  4. “Take some time to really look at this moment. Look at it through your eyes as you saw it at that young age.
  5. Pause: “Now look at it from your position outside the experience, as the age you are now.”
  6. Pause: “Notice what conclusions you came to when you were young and how you explained it to yourself.”
  7. Pause: “Return to your adult awareness, how would you explain what’s going on, knowing what you know now?
  1. Pause: Now share with your child self the insights you has as an adult. Explain to your child-self  what’s really happening.
  1. Pause: Now let your child-self know that you he/she is loved and you are there as his/her protector and guide. And that you will help him/her learn about the world. Spend some time developing that loving bond.
  2. Pause: “When you’re ready, return back to this room, bringing your memories with you. Slowly return to your body and to normal consciousness and open your eyes.”
  3. Pause: “Tell me what you saw and experienced and learned.”
  4. Ask whether they are ready to let go of that old belief (it it’s still there) then go to the discretion process of the CBP

Countercurrent Response Technique

This technique works well if your client can’t find or isn’t aware of their negative or limiting beliefs that are in the way. This method allows the subconscious mind to emerge and speak up

  1. Have the client make a positive statement out loud – one that is aligned with their goal or dream (how they want their life to be). This is the positive belief they want to have. For example, “I am successful”.  Tell them to listen internally to whatever response comes up and report it to you. Write it down.
  2. Have them say the positive belief again and again and listen to whatever voice, belief or feeling comes up. Write down every response.
  3. End this process when there is nothing new emerging.
  4. Everything that emerges is an old belief that resides in the subconscious mind. Each one interferes with the creation of their new positive belief and the reality they want to create. Go over the list with them and find out which ones are the real culprits. Take these beliefs to the CB process.
