This process is intended for use by people who want to improve their relationships and are willing to ask themselves some deep and probing questions.

  • This question explores what you want from your relationship. You don't always get what you want, but that doesn't mean you can't at least ask. This question gives you license to speak honestly about everything you want from your relationship, so don't hold back.
  • This question is all about you. It is not about the relationship. What do you want to do with your life and your time? Maybe you just want some free time to pursue your own passions or hobbies, or connect with your friends. It is OK to get greedy here. Get creative. Hunt for the little places where you may have caved and suppressed what you really want simply to please your partner. By being open and honest about what you want for yourself, you recognize that doing something that your partner wants but you don't want requires that you both make a conscious choice. It gives both of you the right and the responsibility to compromise sometimes and stand your ground at other times.
  • This question allows you to set boundaries. It is the opposite of the first question. What behaviors by your partner are you bumping into that feel somehow invasive, disrespectful or hurtful? Spell them out here. You are letting your partner know the impact certain behaviors have on you.
  • If you get triggered by some behavior of your partner, you may assume that your partner has some harmful intention beneath that behavior. That assumption may or may not be true; but your trigger probably feels very true. If this happens, it is called a "projection" and is based on some part of you that you have disowned. This reaction is quite common. People project all the time. Until we can integrate the wounds we carry, we project the source of those wounds on others. This way, we avoid feeling the pain of those unresolved wounds. As you answer this question, be rigorous about your answers. Get them all out and on paper. Any behavior by your partner that you believe is intended to harm you somehow is simply an assumption you are making that may or may not be true, but it belongs as an answer to this question.
  • This question is about looking into the mirror of who you are and taking ownership of what is there. Don't try to make it look pretty. Be radically honest about what you see. When you have provided as many answers as you can to this question, draw a solid line beneath the last answer. The next step will show you why.
  • This step is done with the coach and each party individually, and may require several sessions with each party to complete. Both parties must take enough time to dig deep and answer the questions honestly.
